Kathmandu : The Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu arrested a person from Tinpiple at Tarakeshwar municipality on Tuesday evening on the charge of smuggling in five kilogrammes of gold via the Kerung transit point on the border with China.
The Range organized a press conference here today to share the news of the arrest. On the occasion, police said that the trend of gold smuggling through the Kerung point has increased in recent days after they adopted strong checking measures at the Tribhuvan International Airport.
Chief of the Range, Senior Superintendent of Police Basanta Kumar Lama, said that they nabbed Sob Bahadur Tamang of Gosainkunda-9 along with the five kilogrammes smuggled gold. Tamang had hidden the gold inside his belt and was travelling to Kathmandu in a public bus.
SSP Lama said as per preliminary investigation Tamang was carrying the gold for the smugglers with the enticement that he would be given Rs 50 thousand per kilogramme.
Police also confiscated one mobile phone set from Tamang.
Before this, police had arrested two people on September 25 while they were bringing three kilogrammes of smuggled gold. They were travelling on motorbike to Kathmandu along with the gold.
Police arrested Nara Bahadur Ghale and Pemba Tamang of Gosainkunda rural municipality acting on a tip-off that they were carrying the smuggled gold to Kathmandu from the Kerung transit point.
