At least six militants have been killed and 20 villages have been liberated in Alinegar district of Afghanistan’s eastern Laghman province, as government forces have been attempting to stabilize security ahead of Saturday’s voting day, said a statement of the army Wednesday.
The operations were launched on Monday, besides killing six armed militants and retaking 20 villages, four more insurgents have been wounded and two others arrested so far, the statement said.
According to the statement, the operations would continue until the restive district and its vicinity are cleansed of the insurgents ahead of the election day. Government forces have already launched cleanup operations in the troubled districts of the war-battered country to ensure security for the voters.
The one-day voting for the Sept. 28 presidential elections begins on Saturday amid tight security as the Taliban outfit has vowed to disrupt the polling process.
