Bardibas, Oct 15 : Sale of earthenware has increased in the villages of Mahottari district, on the eve of Tihar and Chhath festivals.Newly made earthenware like diyo (used for oil-fed lamps) and jar for various purposes are used in the festival as per Maithil tradition. Use of new utensils is also regarded as auspicious to begin any new work.And their huge demand has led to specific market selling earthen and ceramic wares only. More than 20 new such shops have sprouted in the major chowk and local bazaar of Bardibas, according to General Secretary of Bardibas Trade Association Bhawanath Khatiwada.This is hence a good opportunity for business and income for the Kumhal community, for whom pottery is ancestral profession. And this is only time when they are busy in making earthenware as plastics have taken over the mud and clay products that were an item of daily use since traditions.Business transaction worth Rs. 2.5 million alone is expected to take place over the sale and purchase of earthenware in Mahottari bazaar alone during the Tihar and Chhat festival, according to the Mahottari Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
