Building handover hit hard; inmates facing tough time

Owing to budget crunch, the detention centre constructed on the premises of district jail, Damauli, has yet to be handed over.

Though the Rishi Shakti Builders and Engineers Pvt Ltd Dumre completed construction of building within the agreed date of December 1, the building handover process has been stalled for failing to make timely payment of the bills.

The district prison having capacity to accommodate 35 now is managing 148 jailbirds due to delay in handover. They are facing hard time for sleep and wash room uses, shared Narayan Prasad Adhikari, information officer at the district prison.

Though the Department of Prison Management has monitored the building status, the process could not take headway. Adhikari added, “The operation of detention home has not begun due to prolonged payment process”.

The office building, security barrack and women detention centre have been constructed at the cost of Rs 64.4 million. The building with capacity to accommodate 80 inmates is well-equipped.
